About Word Kettle

Word Kettle is a small, free site for people who love words: a fast word finder for game night, and large-print puzzles you can print at home.

What you can do here

• Find every word you can make from a set of letters, with blanks and filters.
• Solve anagrams, including phrases of several words.
• Fill in missing letters with the pattern finder, or check whether a word is valid.
• Browse complete word lists, such as words with Q and no U.
• Print large-print word search puzzles, or make your own.

Everything runs in your browser. Searches are fast, work on any phone or computer, and do not require an account.

Our word list

All tools use ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), a list of 172,820 English words that its authors placed in the public domain. It contains common and uncommon words, plurals and verb forms, and leaves out proper nouns, abbreviations and words with hyphens or apostrophes.

ENABLE works for popular word games, but it is not the official dictionary of any of them. Official game dictionaries are licensed and differ from one another, so a word may be accepted in one game and rejected in another. When it matters, check the rules of the game you are playing.

Definitions

Short definitions come from Open English WordNet (2025 edition), an openly licensed dictionary of English that grew out of Princeton WordNet. We show up to three senses per word and shorten long entries. For an inflected form, such as cats or ran, we show the definition of the base word. Some valid game words, especially rare ones, have no definition yet.

How we filter offensive words

We want our results to be family-friendly, so slurs, strong profanity and sexual insults are hidden by default, including some words that also have a rarer innocent meaning. Today that is 247 of the 172,820 words in ENABLE. The list started from the open LDNOOBW word list and was reviewed by hand.

Hidden words are still valid, and the word checker always reports them. We also keep them out of our definitions and out of the random letters of our word search puzzles.
